You don’t even need a wall!

The compact design of the 2-Tower Farm Wall vertical garden is made to be mounted (onto a fence or wall), but some people would rather have it freestanding or mobile. In this case, a couple of wheels and a platform could really come in handy. That way you can roll it outdoors when the whether is nice, indoors when it’s not, and move it around when you have company, to clean the floors, etc.
This quick build is great for bringing fresh herbs into the classroom or even your restaurant.

ZipGrow Farm Walls:

A New Body to the Old Soul

“New body, old soul” speaks to the fact that even though our farming and gardening technology changes, the meaning and importance of traditional values still guide what we do as growers.

Our ZipGrow Farm Wall was recently on display at the National Heirloom Expo in Santa Rosa to demonstrate the possibilities for anyone to grow their own garden despite lack of space, lack of water, or lack of gardening expertise!

Farm Wall FAQ

Setting up the Farm Wall

Putting together the Farm Wall typically takes two hours or less. You can do this yourself, though having another pair of hands will probably make it go by faster. Watch the video here for more info.

Finding a place for your Farm Wall

Farm Walls are a unique form of garden since they can be built in spaces that aren’t typically used for gardening! Growing things vertically means that you have to think more carefully about wind and light. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere you’ll probably want to put the Farm Wall on a south-facing wall. If you’re in a very sunny and hot place, then consider a shade cloth to protect your crops from burning in the sun.

Learn more in these videos.

Maintaining the Farm Wall

Without a top-off tank, you’ll want to check on your Farm Wall once a day. With a top-off tank, you can leave your Farm Wall for two days or more, depending on how many tanks you have and where you are located. When you check on the Farm Wall, look for pests and check the water level in the gutter to make sure that there is enough.

Time Requirements

How much time does a Farm Wall require?

The greatest investment of time and labor is in the building phase as you’re getting the Farm Wall built and put up. After that check-ups usually only take a few minutes.

Troubleshooting the Farm Wall

Potential issues with the Farm Wall are:

1) Clogged lines. Sometimes debris or salt build-up can cause a clog in the irrigation line. Clogs are usually easy to dislodge with a simple flick, but if they remain unnoticed for a long time, your plants could wilt.

2) Stem rot. Correct placement of the wicking strip is essential for keeping roots moist and avoiding leaks out of the front of your towers. If the wicking strip is too far forward, water may be redirected to flow over the stem of the plant. This can cause rotting, but is fixed by moving the wicking strip backwards towards the back of the tower housing.

3) Pests. Pests like aphids or even plant disease like powdery mildew always seem to find their way into your garden. Don’t worry, this is part of gardening! There are several easy control options available to you. You can use gentle pesticides such as Safer Endall or Serenade for many pests. (Check out this post for more information.)

Vertical Gardens are Beautiful

The idea goes back to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Often, vertical wall gardening techniques have relied on creepers, trellising, or hanging pots.

Many vertical gardening systems proved effective, but they were bulky, heavy, and difficult to maintain. Often they required structural reinforcements to the building.

Since hydroponic wall gardens don’t require soil (which is heavy), the Farm Wall can be mounted on most surfaces. But the real secret is in the modular design.

ZipGrow Towers™ were designed for agricultural production. The towers are easily removable for routine seeding and maintenance. This is why many commercial farmers choose ZipGrow to grow their crops for market. The result is a beautiful wall garden designed for abundant harvests and easy maintenance.

BEAUTIFUL. FUNCTIONAL. PRODUCTIVE.
